How to Commission Boxes

Welcome to our commissioning page.  Here we explain the four key stages involved in commissioning a box -

Stage 1 - Initial Discussions

It is certainly useful if you have a clear idea of what you want and can either sketch or explain it.  We can design a wide range of wooden boxes from the traditional style to the more contemporary.  It may be useful to consider the following prior to contacting us:

  • Budget  Do you have a set budget to work with or perhaps money is not an issue?  Knowing your budget will help us suggest such things as the materials that can be used, the overall time available to create the item and add detail, and finish to apply.

  • Lead Time  How soon do you require the giftware? Turnaround for commissions depends on a number of factors.  We always have a certain amount of wood in stock that would allow a commission to be made reasonably quickly. However, if a specific material is needed then it could take longer.

  • Wood Type  Do you have a specific preference to the wood used or is it generally either a light or dark wood?  We use a variety of woods and mixed media (eg  metals, clay, suede, wood alternatives).

  • Packaging  Do you require personalised packaging? To add that special finishing touch, we can provide gift packaging including gift tags, boxes and Certification.

If you are based locally, we can visit you and bring along some samples of our work as a benchmark of our quality craftsmanship.  If not then we can still discuss designs by post, phone, or email.

Once a design, price and delivery date have been agreed we will confirm everything by email.  A deposit is normally required for all commissioned work and is flexible to suit each individual customer.

Stage 2 - Prototyping or Computer Generated Model

The next stage, once we have discussed your requirements and considered the materials, budget and lead time for your commission, may be to create either a prototype from basic mdf/wood or a computer generated model and/or fully rendered imageThis will give you an opportunity to see the basics of how the final piece will look.  It's at this key stage that it is easy to change and rearrange elements at minimal cost. You may decide to omit this stage if time is limited and you are certain of your requirements.

Stage 3 - Creation

The prototype/design has been agreed and now it is time to create the commission.  We will keep you up to date by sending digital images at key creative stages via email. We can also provide personalised packaging which includes gift tags, certification, and presentation boxes.  Logos or basic inscriptions can be burned/pyrographed into a commission.

Stage 4 - Delivery

The time it takes to create a commission hugely depends on a number of factors including choice of materials, type of finish, prototyping (if required), number and level of detail required, current workload, and final destination (see example image 3 above, boxes ready for packing/delivery).  We always endeavour to stick to a delivery date especially if it is for a special occasion such as a wedding gift or retirement gift or another special occasion.  Whenever possible we will personally deliver the giftware within Northern Ireland.  For all other occasions we tend to use the most suitable postal service.
